Individual Rights
This principle guarantees that citizens possess basic rights and liberties. This idea can be traced back to Thomas Jefferson’s quote on, “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness…” in the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson had argued that all human beings were born with three natural rights, life, liberty and property and the purpose of government was to protect those rights. The Founders debated the best way to do that, but in the end, the Constitution was changed, or amended, to include the protection of certain rights, which can be found in the Bill of Rights.
